How does the problem impact the environment?
Ocean acidification effects the environment by killing most of the life in the area and therefore destroying the environment itself. With the addition of more CO2 the water becomes more acidic. This means that the water can easily dissolve many calcium shells. Such creatures like snails and clams will have their shells weaken and dissolved. The water temperature will also rise a couple degrees. This change in temperature will have a large impact on both the life and the icecaps. water levels will rise and much of the life will die. A small change of 3 degrees Celsius would turn a healthy coral reef into a dead zone will no life or color.
What is the economic impact of this problem?
|
Ocean acidification will have a very large impact on the economy. Since it will kill many creatures in the ocean, people who depend on the sea for food and business will be left hungry and poor. Most of the fishing industries will go out of business because there will be no fish left. Also millions of people in the pacific islands will have no source of food since their entire life revolves around the sea. This means 246 billion dollars worth of sea life will be lost if the ocean gets more acidified than it already is.
